Nassau Bahamas day 3

Downtown Nassau
The Queens Staircase

After seeing the Queens Staircase and the Fort, our little group wandered into a scary part of Nassau. We knew we were in a bad area when we started seeing homes like the one shown in the picture below. The homes got more run down and scary as we walked. Finally we found a nice looking black lady who was on her way to work. We asked her for directions and she told us where we needed to go. She looked a little worried about us, then looked at her watch knowing she probably would be late for her job, but had us follow her out of that scary part of town.

We all hiked down this dirt hill covered in trash and broken seashells and ended up at a school. The lady helping us pointed to the street were we needed to be and she went her way. We tried to give her some money for helping us but she wouldn't take it. She just wanted to help us out of the kindness of her heart.
I felt so bad for these kids! You can't tell from the picture I took, but their playground was covered in trash. I wanted so bad to go and clean the school grounds! The whole town was dirty and rundown. I'm so very blessed to live in a beautiful place where I can feel safe.
We went into a little shack across from the school where floats were being made for the New Years Parade.

This is Tim and Anja hand in hand, happy to be alive and out of the scary area we just visited.

There were a lot of old building in downtown Nassau
